FABRICS & FILLINGS

When choosing a fabric it is important to spend time and make an informed choice. Colour should not be the only factor!

White is not an ideal choice for someone who likes to wear denim all the time as dye transfer to the furniture can occur.

Take time to ensure that the fabric that you are choosing is right for you, don’t choose a cream, cheap cotton if you want a fabric to look good and last. Nothing is invincible but by making an informed choice you can hope to have a suite that will last you many years. E.g. Draylon velvet may have a stuffy "floral and plain" image but there are many modern Draylons about which look great and yet still retain the same benefits. Being hard wearing and inherently stain repellent, if you do mark it you can spot wipe most marks straight off immediately, gradual soiling can be removed by shampooing.

Do not be misled by the price of a fabric, just because it is expensive does not mean that it is very good quality, you could be paying for the complexity of the weave or design rather than quality.

Do not be misled by the "thickness" of a fabric, just because a fabric feels thick does not mean it is good quality and will last, flame retardant treatments etc. can alter the feel of a fabric and can be misleading. E.g. silk is extremely thin and yet it is incredibly strong, it might soil but it will last.

Leather Upholstery ~ Leather is available as an alternative to fabric. There are different types available which give many different looks.

The chair to the right has been re-upholstered using rub off hide, this gives the effect of the leather having aged over years of use. (Right)

We can supply fabrics from many leading manufactures, such as Sanderson, Romo, GP&J Baker, Parker Knoll, Blendworth and Linwood to name a few. We provide a comprehensive range that covers all price range requirements from budget to top of the range fabrics including horse hair fabric and leather.

Trimmings
If you want it to look even more different you can do other things to change the look of your suite. E.g. Contrast piping, ruche or flange cord can be used to give a different look. If your suite had a fringe around the base you could use a different type or omit it altogether or perhaps have skirts instead; all these subtle changes can give a completely different look.

The chair right has both ruche trimming and a tassel fringe (Right)

Cushion Fillings
There are several choices when choosing cushions for your suite. Foam, feathers, sprung or fibre.

Foam is the most common choice we stock three basic cushions (others available):

  • CMHR40 This is identified buy being blue, it is a firm but not hard cushion that will last you aprox. 5 years +
  • CMHR50 this is identified by being pink, it is a soft foam
  • Cold Cure this is identified by being white, it is a firm cushion which will last you aprox. 10 years +
  • Dunlowpillow cushions are available to order

Feathers ~ these make a very good filling for cushions, both seat and back, but they can add to cost. Feather cushion interiors must be sewn in pockets, with each pocket being filled individually with feathers, this prevents the feathers moving around and ending up in one place, e.g. falling to the bottom of a back cushion. There are many different types of feathers, which produce different results so should be chosen with care. If you are to choose feather cushions you must be prepared to "plump" them now and again to help them retain their shape.

This suite to the right has pocketed feather cushions (Right)

White fibre can also be used as a cushion filling, this give a very soft "cushy" seat, but you should be advised that it does not last. White fibre is like candy floss, once the air has been squashed out of it there is no way of plumping it back as you can with feathers, as such it would eventually need replacing.

Sprung cushions are also available.
